Word game glossary

The terms that come up in word games and puzzles, in plain language.

Terms

  • Anagram: a word made from the same letters as another word in a different order. Listen and silent are anagrams.
  • Rack: the letters you hold and can play from. In Scrabble and most similar games a rack has seven tiles.
  • Tile: one letter piece. In an app it is a square with a letter and a point value.
  • Blank tile: a tile without a letter that can stand for any letter. It scores no points itself. In this tool you type a question mark for it.
  • Bingo: playing all tiles of your rack in one turn, which earns a bonus. In Scrabble that is 50 points.
  • Hook: a letter added to the front or back of a word on the board to make a new word, such as adding S to make a plural.
  • Parallel play: placing a word next to another word so that several short words form at once.
  • Premium square: a square on the board that doubles or triples the value of a letter or a whole word.
  • Prefix and suffix: a group of letters added to the beginning or end of a word, such as re- in replay or -ing in playing.
  • Rack leave: the tiles that remain on your rack after you play. Good players think about them when choosing a word.
  • Exchange: giving back tiles to the bag in exchange for new ones, in place of playing a word.
  • Pattern: a word with some letters known and others missing, such as s__rt. It is how crossword answers and many puzzles are described.
  • Wildcard: a symbol that stands for an unknown letter or letters. In the pattern solver an underscore or question mark is one letter and an asterisk is any number of letters.
  • Wordle colours: in Wordle-style puzzles green means the right letter in the right place, yellow means the letter is in the word but elsewhere, and gray means it does not occur.
